Tapestry - How we use Tapestry at Gainsborough Nursery School

Tapestry is our secure online learning journal used across the LMNS Federation to connect home and school. It allows parents and carers to see key moments from their child’s learning and celebrate important steps in their development.

We use Tapestry alongside regular face-to-face communication, conversations at drop-off and pick-up and termly meetings.

⭐ Our Approach: Children Come First

Our priority will always be being present with your children — playing, teaching, listening and supporting their learning.

Tapestry is a helpful tool, but it should never take time away from interacting with children. Research and experience tell us that children make the best progress when adults are engaged with them, not with a device.

So while you may see posts from time to time, especially when something is new, significant or a genuine milestone, you will not see constant daily updates.

What You Can Expect

We use Tapestry to:

  • Share weekly or fortnightly learning overviews so you know what we’re focusing on
  • Post curriculum challenges or ideas to support learning at home
  • Share a first week welcome post
  • Record significant ‘wow’ moments (for example, a first independent zip, new vocabulary, counting confidently, riding a bike for the first time)

Quality over quantity matters.

Every child is unique — and every post celebrates something meaningful.

🚫 What We Do Not Use Tapestry For

We do not post:

  • Daily activity logs
  • Photos of every routine activity
  • Frequent updates showing the same type of play over and over
  • Large batches of photos taken instead of interacting

Taking a photo, uploading it, writing a caption and assigning it takes around 10–15 minutes per post.

If a key person did that for just eight children, that could mean over two hours spent documenting instead of playing, supporting or supervising.

We believe your child deserves adults who are:

✔ playing alongside them
✔ listening
✔ supporting friendships and interactions
✔ extending learning
✔ keeping them safe

—not spending long periods behind an iPad.

Safety and Security

Tapestry is secure and password protected. Only people with parental permission and authorised school staff can see your child’s journal.

How Families Can Use Tapestry

We warmly encourage parents to upload:

  • Special family experiences
  • First attempts or new achievements
  • Cultural celebrations
  • Stories, songs or interests your child loves
  • Photos or voice notes showing home learning or talk time

This helps us understand your child’s interests and strengthens home-school partnership.

You can also comment on posts — short comments like “She loved showing us this at home!” or “We practised taking turns after this” make a big difference.

Tapestry as Part of a Bigger Picture

Tapestry does not replace:

  • Daily conversations
  • Time spent with your child
  • Play
  • Relationship-based learning
  • The joy of “you’ll never guess what I did today!” moments

It is a support tool, not the core of our curriculum.

We also create a weekly class book with the children as a class, which supports spoken language, memory and reflection and remains accessible in the classroom for children to revisit.

If You Have Questions

We know every family uses Tapestry differently. If you’re unsure how to log in, upload or access content, just ask — we’re happy to help.
